We are building a fantastic pub & restaurant, If you would like to be involved in the above roles or just generally, please send us an email.

We look forward to hearing from you soon

We can’t do this without you.

Since the start of the Project to reconstruct The George, the community has contributed many thousands of hours to its success. Much of this time, along with free professional expertise, has been given by past and present members of the Committee in setting up and running our Community Benefit Society, establishing feasibility, preparing and administering the first Share Offer, applying for grants, organising events and planning the next steps as we move towards our goal. We could not, however, have achieved this without the support of other Society members and Friends of The George who have volunteered to help with events, society business and in spreading our message.

Now, thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund and lottery players across the country, we have secured practically all the funding necessary to carry out the Project Development Phase (planning and activities up to the start of reconstruction), there will more, many and varied opportunities for members of our community and supporters to give their time and professional skills. In fact, the Heritage Fund recognises volunteer time as a vital contribution to the overall project budget; a defined cost offset by individual’s participation.

In the Project Development Phase, therefore, and, if we are successful in obtaining Delivery Phase funding, during the reconstruction which will run alongside an ambitious programme of heritage activities we need your help in:

  • assisting in the organisation and running of community events and the Society (perhaps even joining the Committee or a working group);
  • acting as Project ‘Ambassadors’;
  • contributing your skills (the ‘skill-set’ required is much wider than you would probably imagine);
  • taking part in site maintenance and improvement and reconstruction;
  • or leading or assisting in a wide range of heritage, arts, photographic and community projects.

As a volunteer there will be opportunities to learn and develop skills, enjoy and make a real difference to Wickham Market.

If you would like to help and make that difference, contact us by e-mail  or, speak to a member of the Committee, possibly at one of our forthcoming events. We can then notify you of specific opportunities as they arise.
